About

Hi, I'm Jonathan !

Most mornings at my place start with chaos—school lunches half-packed, a missing shoe crisis, three kids debating who sat in “that” chair first, and my wife begging to come to work with me to escape it all. Amongst this, there are a vast range of pets looking for attention, and most recently, a Cocker Spaniel wagging his tail like he’s running the show (he’s currently in training to become a therapy dog, but for now he’s mostly a professional crumb inspector). Somewhere in that chaos, there’s COFFEE… and a quiet reminder that life is rarely neat or predictable. Most people are doing their best while balancing relationships, responsibilities, work, family and whatever unexpected problem has appeared that week.

Professionally, I am a registered Counsellor, Psychotherapist and Professional Supervisor, as well as the founder of Where’s Your Head At Counselling. My aim is to offer a space that feels safe, genuine and supportive. A place where you can be honest, understand yourself more clearly and work towards meaningful change without feeling judged or pressured to become someone you are not.

Whether you’re here to heal, grow or simply find steadier ground, you can expect a therapeutic relationship that feels safe and real, supported by empathy and evidence-based practice.

I would love the opportunity to journey along side you.

Get To Know Me

Over the years, I’ve made it my mission to keep learning so I can bring the very best to the people I work with. My formal qualifications include Counselling and Integrated Psychotherapy, Family Therapy, Christian Counselling, and Professional Supervision. I am also a Certified Child and Adolescent Trauma Professional, registered with the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) and a member of the Australian Counselling Association College of Supervisors.

I continue to develop my knowledge across a broad range of therapeutic approaches. These include cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, psychoanalytic approaches, mindfulness-based therapies, solution focused therapy, Gestalt therapy, play based approaches and somatic practices. I also have a strong professional interest in neuroscience and what it can teach us about behaviour, emotional regulation, neuroplasticity and healing. Neuroscience is an area of ongoing interest rather than a separate formal qualification, and it helps inform the curiosity I bring to understanding how people think, feel and respond.

At the centre of my work is a person-centred and trauma informed approach. This means I do not try to fit every person into the same therapeutic model. I draw from different approaches according to your needs, personality, experiences and goals. For me, the heart of therapy is a real human connection. Qualifications and therapeutic methods matter, but people are more likely to speak openly when they feel safe, respected and genuinely understood. I aim to keep counselling authentic, collaborative and, when appropriate, lightened by humour.

Some people come to counselling wanting tools for an immediate concern. Others want to explore longstanding experiences, beliefs and relationship patterns more deeply. We can focus on practical change, deeper psychotherapy or a combination of both. Your strengths, successes, values and the difficulties you have already survived are important parts of your story. Recognising these does not minimise painful experiences. It helps us understand the abilities and resilience you already possess.

You remain the expert on your own life. My role is to bring professional knowledge, curiosity, perspective and support so that we can make sense of what is happening and find a way forward that feels realistic for you.

Professional Experience

Long before counselling, my working life took the scenic route through labouring, traffic controlling, warehousing, forklift operation, retail, graphic design and visual merchandising. It was a varied background that taught me how to relate to people across very different workplaces and walks of life.

For over seven years, I also volunteered in youth ministry, where I held several leadership positions and supported young people through the challenges of adolescence. This gave me early experience in mentoring, communication, responsibility and creating spaces where people felt welcomed and valued. It also helped me recognise how much I enjoyed listening, building trust and helping others find direction.

My professional pathway into the helping field began in residential and community support. I worked alongside people experiencing complex mental, emotional and practical challenges, supporting them within their homes and communities. I later moved into youth work, community mentoring and counselling, where I supported young people and adults from a wide range of backgrounds and circumstances.

This experience eventually led me into school counselling within an alternative learning program for senior secondary students who had disengaged from, or been excluded from, mainstream education. Many of these young people were living with trauma, homelessness, addiction, family breakdown and mental health difficulties. Building relationships with students and their families who often mistrusted therapy strengthened my ability to connect with people who may be cautious about asking for help.

Since establishing Where’s Your Head At in 2021, I have worked with adolescents, adults, couples and families through private practice and external counselling organisations. My work has included supporting people with trauma, anxiety, depression, addictions, grief, relationship difficulties, emotional regulation, neurodivergence and significant life transitions. I also provide professional supervision to counsellors and other practitioners, helping them reflect on their client work, strengthen their clinical practice and continue developing professionally.

Each stage of my working life has shaped the way I practise today. It has taught me how to connect with people from different industries, backgrounds and life experiences, while combining genuine human connection with practical support and deeper therapeutic work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Taking the first step towards any type of counselling service can bring up a lot of questions. Here are some helpful answers about how counselling works.

What kinds of issues can counselling help with?

Counselling can support you through anxiety, stress, grief, depression, relationship difficulties, life transitions, and self-esteem challenges. It provides a safe, supportive environment to explore any thoughts or feelings that leave you feeling overwhelmed or stuck.

Sessions offer a collaborative, non-judgmental space to talk through your concerns at your own pace. Your counsellor works with you to understand your experiences, uncover underlying patterns, and develop meaningful strategies to navigate daily life.

The number of sessions depends entirely on your individual needs and goals. Some clients find what they need in short-term support for a specific challenge, while others choose longer-term therapy for deeper self-exploration and ongoing growth.

Yes, your privacy is strictly respected. What you share in sessions remains confidential between you and your counsellor, subject only to standard legal and ethical exceptions regarding safety or harm, which are explained clearly at your first appointment.

It is completely normal to feel uncertain about starting therapy. Counselling can be valuable for anyone looking to gain self-awareness, improve their emotional well-being, or navigate difficult life circumstances with professional, unbiased guidance.

Not at all. While counselling provides vital support during acute challenges or crises, it is equally helpful for proactive mental maintenance, personal growth, building resilience, and developing healthy coping habits before stress feels overwhelming.

I’m here to listen, understand, and help you figure out where your head is at.

PLEASE NOTE:
